The chairs’ wooden spindles, legs, bendings and arms are hammered into grooves and sealed with glue, just like in the 1700s. Each item in this collection — dining room chairs, rockers and rocking chairs, benches, bar stools and counter stools and farm tables — is custom made after receiving the order.

American Windsor Chair is handcrafted in the traditional three-wood construction developed in the 18th century.

The chairs, benches and stools are made with three different woods. Hard maple is used for the vase style legs and stressors (the horizontal H-shaped wooden dowels that connect the legs for added strength). Maple is a tight-grained wood that holds its shape when the legs are turned on a lathe. The chairs’ seats are hand-shaped from two inch white pine wood, a softer wood that is more easily carved. And the area above the seat — the spindles, bending and arms — is made of red oak. The legs and spindles are held in place by a split wedge construction. Arm knuckles and wings are individually carved.

The chairs are painted or stained depending on the color and finish the customer wants before they are shipped. Because stain takes differently to various types of wood, slight variations can be noticeable. These variations are typically considered charming as they add character to the Windsor.
