Description
Antique Reproduction Solid Wood Philadelphia Low Back Windsor Chair
American Windsor Chairs

The Antique Reproduction Solid Wood Philadelphia Low Back Windsor Chair is an exact replica of the original style. American Classic Reproduction Windsor chairs have no nails, screws or metal. The chairs’ wooden spindles, legs, bendings and arms are hammered into grooves and sealed with glue, just like in the 1700s. Each item in this collection — dining room chairs, rockers and rocking chairs, benches, bar stools and counter stools and farm tables — is custom made after receiving the order.

Lifetime Warranty:
Our reproduction handcrafted chairs and tables use old custom assembly techniques and are marketed as heirloom, antique reproductions that can be passed on to future generations. The chairs carry a lifetime guarantee. Our woodworker will repair them for free. The customer has to pay the shipping charges.

History of the Windsor Chair:
Windsor chairs get their name from the town of Windsor, England, where the chairs were used locally in the late 1600s. Windsor chairs originally were designed to use outdoors, and their open backs allowed the wind to pass through without blowing them over. The original chairs had arched backs that country folk could slip a burlap bag over to block the wind. Later versions had a bracket at the top of the back for people to drape a coat. One story had the king of England taking refuge from a storm in a local cottage, where he sat in a commoner’s Windsor chair. The king liked the chair and decided to get chairs like it at his palace. That made the chairs popular with the upper class.

By the early 18th century, Windsor chairs had made their way to England’s colonies in America. Some paintings of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution show the founding fathers sitting in Windsor chairs. Our American Windsor Chairs can be found in Independence Hall in Philadelphia and at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home, and their ties to America’s early history have kept them popular. Our Reproduction Windsor Chairs are also in the board room of the PBS television show of “This Old House” in Rockefeller Center in New York City. Our Windsor Chairs have also been used in various theater productions such as of “1776,” a musical about the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence.
