Amish Versailles Chifforobe

Our new Versailles Chifforobe appeals to our most demanding customers. Contoured wrap around molding on this solid wood chifforobe combines with clean classic lines, adding elegance and charm.

The Chifforobe was first mentioned in the early 1900s in a Sears and Roebuck Catalog. However, it has been said that Mule Chests and Chifforobes originated in medieval Europe in the homes of nobility. Chifforobes tend to be more prevalent and popular in the Southern portion of the United States.

Chifforobes and mule chests are often called Chest of Drawers or Bureaus. Both closet-like chests are usually tall and large to offer plenty of drawers and hanging space. They are ideal for homes that have limited closet space. Both the Mule Chest and Chifforobe are primarily used in bedrooms, but can often be found in hallways, storage rooms for linen and coat storage, dorm rooms and classrooms.

There are often alternative spellings or Chifforobes, such as: Chiffarobe, Chifforobe, Chifferobe, Chiffrobe, Chifrobe, and Shifferobe. Mule Chests and Chifforobes might also be called Wardrobe Chest, Sweater Chest, Grande Chest, Grand Chest, Storage Chest, Chest of Drawers, Bureau or Armoire. Whatever the name, all of our Amish handcrafted chests will surely become a treasured heirloom and a favorite piece of bedroom furniture.
