A High Grade Plywood Back

Fine craftsmanship calls for plywood. The reason for high grade plywood (often made from the same species you select for your bookcase) is that solid wood is going to move. The high grade plywood used in the back of case goods allows for the movement that will happen as the wood responds to changes in humidity. Allowing for this movement prevents splitting and cracking and that is why plywood is used.
