Your Backyard's Best Friend: Why We Love Bats!
Forget harsh chemicals and annoying repellents. When you host a colony of bats, you're embracing nature's most efficient pest control crew! Did you know that a single bat can consume thousands of insects in a single night? That's right, roughly 70% of bat species are insectivores, meaning they feast almost exclusively on those tiny nuisances – especially mosquitoes, gnats, and moths that can spoil your evening BBQ. Imagine enjoying a peaceful sunset on your patio, free from the incessant buzz of blood-thirsty mosquitoes. That's the power of bats! Beyond pest control, these fascinating creatures are vital to healthy ecosystems, and you'll be captivated watching them emerge at dusk, gracefully swooping and diving as they patrol your skies. It's a truly beautiful spectacle that adds a touch of wild wonder to your home. The Amish Difference: Built to Last, Designed for Life
Our bat houses are proudly handcrafted in Northern Indiana, USA, by skilled Amish artisans who pour generations of woodworking wisdom into every piece. But there's a modern twist! We build these exceptional bat houses from eco-friendly poly lumber. What is poly lumber? It's a remarkable material made from recycled milk jugs – giving new life to plastic and keeping it out of landfills! This isn't just good for the planet; it's incredibly good for your bat house. Unlike wood, poly lumber:- Never splinters, cracks, or rots.
- Requires zero painting or staining.
- Resists fading from sun, rain, and snow.
- Offers a comfortable, stable internal temperature for bats.
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers!
Curious about setting up your new bat haven? We've got you covered!- Where is the best place to mount my new bat house? Location is key for attracting bats! Mount your bat house at least 15 feet high on a south or southeast-facing wall or sturdy pole. Building walls are often ideal, especially in colder or drier climates, as they retain heat well. If you're using a pole, consider mounting two bat boxes back-to-back to create a "double-sided" house for better temperature regulation. Always choose a sunny spot, avoiding any perpetually shady areas.
- Can I mount my bat house on a tree if I don’t have a wall or pole available? While possible, it's generally not recommended. Trees often provide too much shade, which bats dislike, and can expose the colony to predators like owls. If a wall or pole simply isn't an option, select the sunniest, most open tree available and mount the box at least 20 feet away from any obstructing branches.
- How long will it take for bats to move into their new home? Patience is a virtue when inviting bats! Sometimes, if the conditions are just right and bats are already in the area, they can move in within a few days. On average, however, it typically takes anywhere from 2 to 6 months. In some cases, it might even take a year or more. If bats are known to live nearby or if others in your community have successfully attracted them, your chances are generally better. There’s no need to add anything to "lure" them in; with the right setup, they'll discover their perfect new residence on their own.
- How can I tell if bats have moved into the house? The easiest way to confirm residency is to look for tiny droppings (guano) accumulating on the ground directly below the bat house. You can also try observing the house at sunset – on a warm evening, you might spot them emerging to begin their nightly hunt! Remember, try not to disturb the bats. If they feel threatened or too often bothered, they might decide to abandon their home.
- Is it okay to move the bat house once bats have moved in? Absolutely not. Never attempt to handle or move a bat house that has an active colony in it. Handling any wildlife, especially bats, without proper training or equipment is unsafe. While bats are not aggressive and don't typically attack people, they can bite if they feel threatened. Moving an active colony could cause the bats to abandon the house, potentially leaving behind vulnerable young pups. Enjoy watching them from a respectful distance!
