These are just a few of the questions we will address today. If you are not certain about which bed frame you need, we have the ultimate guide here. There’s even a table for quick reference, below.
Why do bed frame dimensions matter?
Not only do you need to ensure your bed frame fits your space comfortably, but you also want to ensure you have sufficient space on your bed. Below, we’ll break down the bed frame dimensions for each bed size, along with tips and notes about each one.
While we approach this guide from the perspective of Amish furniture, it applies to all bed sizes. Amish furniture stands for quality construction, not unique dimensions unknown to the rest of the English world.
This guide explains standard mattress and bed frame dimensions, shares helpful layout tips, and explores when to consider custom sizing. We’ve also included a helpful chart to facilitate easier comparisons.

Twin Bed Frame Dimensions
A twin-size bed frame is an excellent choice for children’s bedrooms, guest rooms, or small apartments. Twin bed frames are the standard bed size for most bunk beds, especially the top bunk. That’s why you’ll see twin-over-twin or twin-over-full designations on bunk beds. Many parents opt to go with twin-over-twin bunk beds that convert into two twin beds for when the children get older, so they both have twin-sized beds in their own rooms.
- Twin Size Mattress Dimensions
- Width: 38″
- Length: 75″
- Twin Bed Frame Dimensions
- Width: 40″-44″
- Length: 77″-81″
- Why Get a Twin-Sized Bed? Twin beds are great for kids or teens, especially if you are a single sleeper, or if you have a small bedroom and don’t want a bed frame to occupy all the space.
- Considerations: This bed size is not ideal for taller individuals; consider a Twin XL for more legroom.
- Amish Advantage: The twin-over-twin convertible beds can last throughout your children’s time at home and beyond when you choose Amish-made quality bed frames.
This twin-sized captain’s bed is one of the widest twin-sized bed frames you’ll find at 43 3/4″ width. It offers solid wood construction and comes with storage drawers or an under-bed trundle!

A twin XL bed is the same width as a twin but with five inches of extra length.
- Twin XL Size Mattress Dimensions
- Width: 38″
- Length: 80″
- Twin XL Bed Frame Dimensions
- Width: 40″-44″
- Length: 82″-86″
- Why Get a Twin XL Bed Frame? This bed frame has the exact dimensions as a standard twin, but adds five inches to the length. If you have a tall teen or are just a few inches too tall for comfort on a twin, the twin XL might be a reasonable upgrade while still keeping the slim width to fit a small space.
- Amish Advantage: Even if the twin XL is not offered as a standard option, most of our Amish builders can accommodate a custom twin XL order.

Full-Size Bed Frame Dimensions (Double Bed)
The full-sized bed is also known as a double bed. It is a space-saving bed size that can accommodate a couple (albeit snugly… or snuggly*), with 16 extra inches of width on the mattress over the twin-sized mattress.
*For a couple is considered to fit “snugly” because it’s a snug fit with just 54″ of width. It can also be viewed as “snuggly” if you love each other and don’t mind sleeping in one another’s arms all night in “snuggling” fashion.
- Full-Size Mattress Dimensions
- Width: 54″
- Length: 75″
- Full Bed Frame Dimensions
- Width: 56″-60″
- Length: 77″-81″
- Why Get a Full-Size Bed Frame? The full-sized bed frame is a great way to add a little extra room if the twin is too slim a fit for you. If you are a single sleeper and you are afraid you’ll roll off the standard twin in the middle of the night, or you need enough space for two in a small room, the full-size bed is an economical way to get the job done.

Queen Bed Frame Dimensions
The queen-size bed frame is the most popular bed choice for couples or individuals who want a big mattress and have a large enough bedroom that a queen won’t be too large. Most of the bed frame images on our website feature a queen.
- Queen-Size Mattress Dimensions
- Width: 60″
- Length: 80″
- Queen Bed Frame Dimensions
- Width: 62″-66″
- Length: 81″-86″‘
- Minimum Room Size: The queen bed frame needs a larger room to have plenty of space to walk around the bed. You will want to have a room that is at least 10′ x 10′ or bigger. Remember, a 10′ x 10′ room would only leave 34″ of clearance around the foot of the bed.
- Why Get a Queen-Size Bed Frame? The queen can comfortably host two people with plenty of space. It can be the centerpiece of a stunning, solid wood bedroom furniture set, as seen below in our wildly popular Amish Siesta Mission Bedroom Set.

- Width: 76″
- Length: 80″
- King Bed Frame Dimensions
- Width: 78″-82″
- Length: 81″-88″
- Minimum Room Size: Your bedroom needs to be a minimum of 12’x12′ for a king-size bed to fit adequately. A 12’x12′ room would leave 56″ of clearance from the footboard to the wall.
- Why Get a King-Size Bed Frame? The king-size bed is the same length as the queen, so the mattress is 80″ long. Similar to the difference between twin and full-size dimensions, the king is 16″ wider than the queen. If you want your master bedroom to have a majestic feel then the king is the way to go. What’s more impressive than a king-size bed frame with a handcrafted headboard?

California King Bed Frame Dimensions
The California king bed is typically four inches longer than a standard king-size bed and four inches narrower in width. It’s still a huge bed frame that requires lots of space and a large room. It just trades a little bit of width for a little bit of length.
- CA King-Size Mattress Dimensions
- Width: 72″
- Length: 84″
- CA King Bed Frame Dimensions
- Width: 74″-78″
