Amish Comb-Back Windsor Arm Chair

Reproduction Dining Chairs

Windsor Chairs originated in early 18th century England. Principally used outdoors, they were painted green to blend in with natural surroundings and mimic the oxidation on statues. American Colonists first saw Windsor style in the 1720s and soon got to making their own! This particular style, known as the "high-back" or "comb-back" (more recently) Windsor was introduced to the market around 1750. Most comb-backs have a lightweight arm rail that has been steamed and bent to support the sitter.

This chair is available in brown maple, cherry, and oak, as well as in a 3-wood combination with a poplar seat, hickory bow, and brown maple spindles and stretchers.

  • Spindles and legs through holes with wedge construction
  • Baluster style turned legs
  • Double scoop seat resembles Early American Windsor design
  • Solid wood construction, made in an Amish woodshop in Ohio

The Multi-Wood Construction Option~

Windsor chairs of the 18th century incorporated the use of three or more wood types to withstand stresses on different parts of the chair while satisfying the body of its design. These woods were selected to provide the right strength, shape and support in the chair. Our multi-wood construction option replicates the method used to construct Windsor chairs hundreds of years ago.

Select this option for a Windsor chair handcrafted with poplar in the seat, hickory in the bow and brown maple wood for the spindles and stretchers. These different woods create strong, lightweight, proportioned chairs that last for decades.

Shown with a black rub-through finish, this bench is also available with more translucent stains that enhance wood grain's beauty. The style is also made into a rocking chair with our Comb-back Windsor Arm Rocker. See our Windsor Continuous Bow Chair for different style. With any questions, give us a call!
