What is Shaker Style?

The Shakers were a group of people who believed in following the teachings of founder and prophet, Ann Lee. The small and radical groups of followers originated in England and settled in the colonial Northeast in 1774. They were known for their humble living, strong and intense drive and work ethic, and various crafting.

The Shakers enjoyed a life of integrity and simplicity. Everything they created had a purpose, and there was no use for fluff in life; they saw excessive ornamentation or décor as a sin and against their way of life. This mentality was easily transposed into their furniture!

Shaker furniture is simple and minimalistic, practical and clean, all while being graceful and sophisticated. Its utilitarian design has become more and more popular due to its alignment with the simplicity of home design.
