The "Journey" from Forest to Home
The creation of heirloom furniture is, indeed, a journey. Starting with the finest of hardwood logs of many species, hand-selected and harvested from sustainable Midwest forests, and ending with custom-built, American-made furniture destined exclusively for your home, Barkman Furniture has many stops along the way...
Hardwood Inspection - Only the finest selection of hardwood logs, harvested exclusively from sustainable forests, are used in the creation of hardwood furniture. In addition, select logs of white pine, red cedar, and aspen are used to create items included the Rustic furniture sets. Fresh from the sawmill, lumber is then graded and sorted to select only the finest boards to be used to build heirloom furniture.
Preparation - Boards are carefully stacked and dried to ensure proper seasoning before the manufacturing process begins. Once boards are adequately seasoned, they are moved to panel processing. During this production process, state-of-the-art woodworking machinery produces panel and frame components to incredibly close tolerances. "Framing" is the actual start of the furniture-making process. In framing, time-honored joinery methods are utilized, such as dovetailing, tongue-and-groove, box joints, and mortise and tenon - all of which of which have been used for centuries to create furniture that stands the test of time and offers a unique aesthetic appeal.
Production - Once a piece of furniture is assembled, hand techniques are employed to ensure that each piece of hardwood furniture from the Barkman Furniture Collection is a one-of-a-kind heirloom. Hours of sanding, planing, and, in some cases distressing, ensures that each piece of furniture bears of the signature of the master craftsperson to whom the furniture was assigned.
Perfecting the Finish - The process of applying custom finishes utilizes a combination of high-end automated spray applicators, along with masterful hand sanding and wiping techniques. The result is always a finish that enhances the natural beauty of the premium hardwood selected while at the same time providing optimal protection to ensure the wood develops beautifully into its patina tone with time.
Delivery - At the end of the furniture-making journey is heirloom furniture of unsurpassed beauty and durability, as close to perfection as humanly possible, with each piece bearing the signature of the furniture artisan ultimately responsible for its appearance and quality. Furniture is then carefully packaged, blanket-wrapped and shipped directly to your home, wasting no time in a warehouse or showroom where the furniture could be mismanaged and warp.
