Welcome to our Amish Hope Chest Collection. This collection is handcrafted by an Old Order Amish woodworker in Lancaster County, in the heart of Amish country, where he’s been building wood furniture for more than 20 years. These heirloom quality chests are built so well, you and your family can enjoy them for years to come.
Hope chests have been around a long time, and are known by several names, including dowry chest, glory box and trousseau chest. Centuries ago, hope chests were exchanged between families when two people got married. They were also given as gifts to young women to be used to hold items for their future marriage. They held things like dresses, blankets and towels that were handmade for the future bride.
Today, hope chests still make popular wedding gifts, as well as storage chests that can be displayed in bedroom or hallway to house blankets, quilts, pillows and other linens. Some are used as toy boxes for the playroom, making clean up time easy and fun.
Some of the hope chests in this collection feature seat rails and double as storage chest and comfy seat that can work well in foyer or entryway. There are also trunks for storage that are handcrafted with solid wood to add unique storage to your home.
Select Woods
Woodworkers carefully select the wood for these fine Amish chests. Woods used for this collection include cedar, oak, cherry, and maple, each bringing its own colors and tones to each and every chest.
Cedar wood is loved for is rich cedar scent and rustic red tones. There are natural oils in the wood that repel pesky bugs too, making cedar a great choice to protect valuable contents. There’s also smooth cherry, prominent oak, and the cool shades of maple to choose from.
There are rich details in the wood grain and each wood features a distinct beauty that goes deeper than the surface, and the character of the wood is preserved with high quality protective finishing.
